Welcome to "Wayward Way" our new horseback riding venue and Camp ground. Designed for day trippers as well as over- nighters, we’ve made approximately 75% of The Park available to riders and their horsy friends. Two major areas found west of “South Park”, the RV Village, are included in what we’re calling Wayward Way and include “The Przewalski" and “The Pony”. Named for their aerial resemblances to an ancient horse and lovable companion respectively (late one night I'm sure!) the ride can be as challenging or relaxing as you choose. The Pony is entered from H-4 in Robinson’s Glen across a sturdy but spooky plank bridge. Left natural but with a multitude of mown trails, you can blaze your own or follow the labyrinthine paths up hill and down. Wildlife abounds including deer and turkey so be forewarned and prepared; watch your horse’s ears! The Przewalski is more easily accessible at four places: 1) across “Kara’s Krossing” between H-1 and H-2, 2) on a trail above the Playground tent area, "Little Valley”, 3) above “Last Trail”, the last tent site area in the Play Ground, and 4) across another challenging plank bridge entered from “Pretty Path Picnic Area”. Inside “The Prez” are rolling, hayed pastures, a hidden lake, running creeks, and precipitous trails cut through wooded hills. Last but not least, the two riding areas are connected in only one rider-friendly place, the ”P2P Pass-Thru” (a.k.a. the Ho Chi Men Trail)! Located north of the Prezs’ nostril and below the “Disappearing Pond” in The Pony... see map and follow signs... or find a better route and let us know! (I've spent many hours riding my trusty John Deer mowing trails hither and yon, seemingly for no purpose... we'll call it therapy but I was lost!) Camping at the hitching post sites is primitive; i.e. no sewer hookups or electricity yet. Water is readily available however and superior bathrooms with acclaimed showers are adjacent the Park Room. Also, a convenient hitching post is just outside the Park Room restrooms. Middle Meadow and Little Lea (see map) may also be utilized by our horse riding friends but check first in office. A small paddock, suitable for one or two equines, can be made available with reservations.
You will find varied terrain with all its natural idiosyncrasies including: Thorny locust, Poison ivy, Mole tunnels, Steep trails and Creek banks, Impenetrable woods, Ticks, Mosquitoes, flies, and Unpredictable wildlife, Etcetera! Please advance accordingly! Remember, accidents cannot be undone!
Take care of your horses and yourselves!
Wayward Way
Rules for Riding:
1) Current Coggins
2) Signed Release, Payment, and Registration in Office prior to ride
3) Adult accompaniment for children under 16 years of age
4) Fork up after horses and place manure where indicated at check-in
5) Ride in specified areas only. If entering or departing the Przewalski through the playground, avoid “afooters” and don’t dally long…
6) 6) Always practice common horse sense and courtesy
7) 7) DO NOT tie your mount up to outhouses, park buildings, equipment, fencing... or to anything your horse could pull down and then drag at breakneck speed through people and structures, terrorizing and potentially injuring Park Guests, not to mention itself, poor beast. In short, use hitching posts or your own horse trailers for securing your animals safely. (I realize some horses never pull. I had one; she ripped 16 feet of fencing, including the cross pieces out of a fence line and ran me over… Criminy!)
Be careful please, and have fun… it’s simply beautiful!
